There’s no better way to finish a day of flying than by relaxing by the ocean with good food and even better friends. Although it was chilly in late September, we sat out on the patio at Waterman’s. Braving the brisk air was more than worth seeing the sun slowly set over the Virginia Beach boardwalk.
Waterman’s is famous for its crushed cocktails, specifically the Orange Crush, so you know I had to try one. It’s made with fresh-squeezed orange juice, orange vodka, triple sec, and a splash of Sprite. Very tasty! I ordered before realizing they had a skinny version. Note to self: always check the drink menu first!
The Buffalo-style fish bites are a locals’ appetizer favorite. Chunks of fresh tuna are lightly breaded, flash fried and tossed with spicy Buffalo sauce. Like the wings, they’re served with celery sticks and bleu cheese dressing. Good stuff. We also ordered the hand-cut mozzarella sticks, which were some of the best I’ve ever had. There was one left that was just as yummy reheated the next day.
For me, dinner was the Just Seafood platter: a combination of jumbo shrimp, sea scallops and lump crabmeat, broiled in a lemon butter white wine sauce. It comes with mashed potatoes and lightly sautéed vegetables. The seafood was super fresh, and the veggies were crisp. Delicious! Mike had a solid Key Lime Pie for dessert (not knowing his KLP socks would be knocked off the next day when we ate at the Kill Devil Grill in North Carolina. More on that fun eatery soon!)
After dinner, we strolled the darkening boardwalk with Grant and Catie, sharing old family stories and chatting about life in general. It was a delightful evening in a beautiful setting. Just perfect.
